There is a field at the edge of town I walked every evening for a season. Nothing happens there. That was the point — I wanted a place ordinary enough that the only event was the light leaving it, and a figure small enough to be almost weather.
I shot on a plate camera because it makes you wait. By the time the exposure is set, the dusk has moved; you learn to expose for the minute that hasn't arrived. This frame is the one evening the grass held still.
"I wasn't photographing the meadow. I was photographing the last minute it was visible."
The print is silver gelatin, made by hand and toned warm so the shadows keep a little of the day. It is an edition of ten; three are spoken for. Each is signed, stamped and numbered on the verso.
