A converted kiln on the waterfront

An old idea, in an old building.

Basin lives inside a nineteenth-century brick kiln — thick walls, high ceilings, and a chimney we kept. The bones already knew how to hold heat. We just added water.

Why we built it

Everyone used to have one.

Nearly every culture worth its salt had a bathhouse — the Finnish sauna, the Turkish hammam, the Russian banya, the Japanese sentō. A warm public room where the whole town went cold and hot on purpose and came out lighter. Somewhere along the way most of us traded it for a screen.

Basin is our attempt to put one back. Not a spa, not a gym, not a members' club — a social bathhouse. You come, you run the circuit, you talk to a stranger or you don't, and you leave better than you arrived.

The temperatures are printed on every door because trust is the whole business. If we say four degrees, it is four degrees.

We kept the chimney.

The plunge sits where the firing floor used to be. The saunas are lined in local cedar; the steam rooms are the original glazed brick, sealed and left honest. Daylight comes down the old flue.

Everything you can touch is a real material doing a real job. Nothing here is a finish pretending to be something else.
